Preclinical study outlines experimental design to evaluate myocardial oxygen consumption indices under extreme hemodynamics.
Why the study?
The validity of previously reported indirect indices of myocardial oxygen consumption has not yet been proven despite their widespread use in health and disease.
This experimental study aims to validate the use of indirect indices for estimating myocardial oxygen consumption under varying hemodynamic conditions.
Validity of indirect MV̇O2 indices remains unproven; leaves open clinical use pending experimental validation.
Indirect indices of myocardial oxygen consumption (MV̇O2) are frequently applied to humans, both in health and disease, to estimate the energetic state of the myocardium. Despite widespread use, the validity of the previously reported oxygen consumption parameters has not yet been proven. Therefore, we designed experiments to examine any indices under maximal variations of hemodynamics and oxygen consumption with special reference to clinically applicable indices.
