Localized pitting corrosion occurs in aluminum (Al) radiators, primarily in areas where breakdown of the oxide layer of Al happens due to the presence of chloride ions (Cl−) in the water. This study evaluates the corrosion resistance of commercially available coolants under different operating conditions. Potentiodynamic polarization tests were performed in the presence of Cl− ions at 30 °C (86 °F) and 80 °C (176 °F). Fourier transform infrared analysis confirmed that coolants B and C contain certain corrosion inhibitors that provide good corrosion resistance against Cl− attack. This work will be beneficial for the automotive industry, where corrosion failure of Al radiators remains a major challenge.
