This work deals with the description of a new American genus in Anomalini Péringuey, a cosmopolitan tribe comprising 68 described genera. The new genus exhibits an unusual morphology for the American fauna. Paraischnopopillia remota gen. et sp. n., from Costa Rica and Panama, shows the greatest morphological similarity to the tropical Asian genus Ischnopopillia Kraatz (row of setae on fronto-clypeal suture, shape of elytra, position of denticle on protarsomere 5), but can be distinguished from other American genera by its strongly curved basally protarsomere 5, with baso-ventral denticle; a transverse row of erect setae just posterior to the frontoclypeal suture; apex of elytron rounded; and asymmetrical parameres. The proposed association between the American and Old World faunas and the recent evidence of divergence times of the phytophagous Scarabaeidae group are discussed.http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:96188F3C-0414-4C4B-99DB-DA607F3E4952http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:13301559-F7A0-4EBF-B71C-58050C49B329
