Institutional presentation of the Journal for Research Cultures (JRC), the international peer reviewed open access journal published by the Research Institute for Arts and Technology in Vienna, given with co-editor Sophie-Carolin Wagner in the Institutional Presentations strand of ISEA2017. The journal is a platform for the communication and presentation of strategies of experimental, transdisciplinary and artistic research practices across epistemic cultures, focusing on how research is done rather than what it is on. Its scope centres on technology-assisted artistic research and the digital humanities and reaches from art and science, critical engineering and hacker cultures to media archaeology, science and technology studies and software studies. The presentation sets out the editorial model developed for the journal: curated content solicited by the editors and the editorial board, an internal vote on abstracts, an open review in which authors, reviewers and editors know one another and work in dialogue towards accessible, essayist prose for the interested lay reader, publication as an open access journal under a Creative Commons licence following the code of conduct of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association, and distributed archiving through LOCKSS.
