The elastic constants c 11 , c 33 , c 44 and c 66 of single-crystal neodymium have been measured at 4.2K as a function of applied magnetic field of up to 8 T. The results are in good agreement with the neutron diffraction and magnetisation data for fields in the (1120) and (0001) directions. There is no comparable neutron work to help understand the effects on the elastic constants of a field in the (1100) direction. The magnetic field produces marked anisotropy in the basal plane of Nd, which is strongly reflected in c 44 in particular.
