A strain of Boophilus microplus (Canestrini) collected near Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, Mexico, was subjected to selection pressure for increased resistance to coumaphos by exposing larvae from individual egg masses to treated paper. Untreated siblings of the surviving larvae were used for reproduction. After selection for 9 generations, the resistance factor in the strain has increased approximately 38 times when compared with a susceptible strain. The resistance pattern suggests that resistance is controlled by multiple genes.
