It pays to be flexible: Flexible ultraviolet random lasers have been fabricated by utilizing nanoparticles embedded in a high-quality ZnO film deposited at 100 °C on a plastic substrate (see image). This approach provides an alternative way of realizing flexible semiconductor lasers in the UV region, and should have significant implications for the development of such useful devices.
