A study of the temperature and frequency (4–100 MHz) dependence of the proton spin–lattice relaxation time in the nematic phase of p-methoxy-d3-benzylidene-d1-p-n-butyl-d9-aniline (MBBA-d13) is reported. The intra- and intermolecular contributions to the proton spin–lattice relaxation rate are separated under certain assumptions with the aid of our earlier deuteron T1 study of the same molecule. The frequency and temperature dependences of the intermolecular contribution are compared with two recent theories of intermolecular spin relaxation.
