For the first time, vandium nonporphyrins have been fractionated. Using graphite furnace atomic absorption, the signal for vanadium was found to follow the UV absorption of the chromatogram. In addition, a simpler, faster procedure has been devised to isolate a vanadium porphyrin fraction that was more nearly free from both vanadium nonporphyrins and nickel porphyrins. Pyrolysis/GC with both the flame photometric (sulfur) detector and the flame ionization detector gave evidence for a variety of sulfur species in both the porphyrin and nonporphyrin fractions.
