It has been well known that the frequency of mutations induced by ionizing radiation is in various organisms directly proportional to the dose. However it has been considered that radiation-induced mutation in the characters of maize endosperm is usually the result of chromosome aberration rather than gene mutation (Stadler 1931; review by Brewbaker and Emery 1962); it has been also reported that somatic mutations in snapdragon are due to minor chromosome deficiencies (Sparrow et al. 1961 and others).
