Based on recent in-situ transmission electron microscopy studies, the existence of metastable crystalline phases (abbreviated as MX phases) in a CoCu thin-film system and their stability are tested. The transformation of these MX phases to amorphous phase at a higher temperature is also investigated, discussed and explored. The present study suggests that there are no such MX phases in a CoCu binary thin film prepared by thermal evaporation of bulk CoCu alloys. The obtained results are explored based on the epitaxial growth of the thin film. The film rupture and de-wetting are also investigated. (© 2004 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
