Catheter ablation maintains sinus rhythm in 79% of patients at 12 months vs. antiarrhythmic drugs.
Why the study?
Atrial fibrillation is the most common supraventricular arrhythmia with significant mortality and thromboembolic risk, and new non-pharmacological treatments have shown greater efficacy in maintaining sinus rhythm than conventional antiarrhythmics.
Does catheter ablation improve maintenance of sinus rhythm compared to pharmacotherapy in patients with atrial fibrillation?
Does catheter ablation improve maintenance of sinus rhythm compared to pharmacotherapy in patients with atrial fibrillation?

Alan Bulava (2010) conducted a review in Atrial fibrillation (n=767). Radiofrequency catheter ablation vs. Antiarrhythmic drugs was evaluated on Maintenance of sinus rhythm without arrhythmia recurrence at 12 months. A pooled analysis of six randomized trials demonstrated that radiofrequency catheter ablation maintained sinus rhythm without recurrence at 12 months in 79% of patients, compared to 19% with antiarrhythmic drugs.
