Key result
POTS is linked to abnormal muscle oxygenation and blood volume during head-up tilt testing.
Why the study?
Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome is characterized by orthostatic intolerance with tachycardia without blood pressure drop, and noninvasive muscle oxygenation monitoring in POTS patients is needed.
Does near-infrared spectroscopy muscle oximetry detect differences in muscle oxygenation between POTS patients and healthy controls during head-up tilt?

NIRS muscle oximetry can quantitatively detect differences in muscle oxygenation between POTS patients and healthy controls during orthostatic stress.
Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a disabling condition characterized by orthostatic intolerance with tachycardia in the absence of drop-in blood pressure. A custom-built near-infrared spectroscopy device (NIRS) is applied to monitor the muscle oxygenation, noninvasively in patients undergoing incremental head-up tilt table (HUT). Subjects (6 POTS patients and 6 healthy controls) underwent 30[Formula: see text]mins of 70∘ on a HUT. The results showed a significant difference in deoxyhemoglobin (Hb), change-in-oxygenation [Formula: see text] and blood volume [Formula: see text] between patients and healthy controls. However, oxyhemoglobin (HbO2) showed a significantly faster rate of change in the healthy controls during the first 10[Formula: see text]mins of the tilt and during the recovery. This NIRS muscle oximetry tool provides quantitative measurements of blood oxygenation monitoring in diseases such as POTS.

Kadamati et al. (2018) conducted a case-control in Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) (n=12). Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) vs. Healthy controls was evaluated on Muscle oxygenation parameters (deoxyhemoglobin, change-in-oxygenation, blood volume, oxyhemoglobin). POTS patients showed significant differences in muscle deoxyhemoglobin, change-in-oxygenation, and blood volume compared to healthy controls during head-up tilt testing.
