A simple terminology is proposed to define the stages of secondary xylem and phloem development in trees: (1) the cambial zone , composed of immediate derivatives of the cambial initial and mother cells capable of further division; (2) zone of radially enlarging derivatives no longer dividing; (3) zone of maturing derivative , where secondary wall thickening occurs; (4) the mature derivatives .
