A relaxation in the ultrasonic response of rapidly cooled niobium containing hydrogen and oxygen is found. Measurements of attenuation and velocity as a function of temperature, frequency, polarization, hydrogen isotope, and annealing temperature are made. Evidence is obtained that the quenched-in defect is an OH₂ complex with tetragonal symmetry.
