The profitability of the breakout trading strategy is typically assessed unconditionally by averaging performance across heterogeneous market conditions. We show that this average is incomplete. In a universe of 1284 historical S&P 500 constituents (1995–2026), the breakout composite exhibits significant exposure to the momentum factor, while its factor-adjusted alpha is indistinguishable from zero. The informational content of a breakout signal depends on the prevailing market condition: when the VIX is low, breakout stocks outperform comparable non-breakout stocks by 1.13 percentage points over six months ( t = 2.47 ), while when the VIX is high, this difference is negative at all four horizons we examine. A two-phase screen of thirteen candidate filters, validated out of sample, retains five filters. Our contribution is a map of when a price-breakout signal is informative. The unconditional result does not capture the signal’s information because it collapses favorable and adverse market conditions that offset one another into a single number.
