We observed interstellar emission from the K 2 2 (99.3 GHz) and the 43 2 (138.2 GHz) transitions of sulfur monoxide (32S16O)-a new interstellar molecule. SO was found in seven galactic sources and is the first 3 molecule detected in space by radio astronomical techniques. We performed statistical-equilibrium calculations to derive column densities and to predict the relative strengths of other SO transitions accessible at millimeter wavelengths.
