By means of a heat conduction microcalorimetric technique, the immersion heat in CCl4 is determined for five samples of activated carbon, with results between −32.45 and −179.3 Jg−1, presenting a precision for all cases less than 0.8%. With the results of the immersion heat, the total surface area is calculated; the obtained values are between 280 m2g−1 and 1500 m2g−1 indicating the difference in the superficial characteristics of the samples.
