The reaction mechanism of electroless deposition was identified via a tapping mode atomic force microscope which was utilized to monitor, ex situ , the morphological evolution for the electroless deposition of cobalt on activated highly oriented pyrolytic graphite during nucleation and growth. Although both chemical and electrochemical mechanisms of electroless deposition were proposed in literature, this study indicated that the reaction mechanism of electroless deposition appears to be an electrochemical mechanism.
