This essay attempts to present a broad and balanced selection of opinion concerning the role and relevance ofterroir in wine character and quality. The components ofterroir — soil, topography and climate — are analysed. These elements are then juxtaposed against the human contribution, and privilegedterroir is seen to reflect evolutionary adaptation to the natural environment.Terroir is judged to be a complex interaction of factors, some still unknown and requiring further study.
