The decay processes in Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe after resonant excitation of Ne 1 s , Ar 2 p , Kr 3 d , and Xe 4 d electrons to Rydberg levels have been studied recently in detail. A comparison between the results shows a clear resemblance in the decay of the Ne 1 s → np , Ar 2 p → ns , Kr 3 d → np , and Xe 4 d → np resonances whereas the Ar 2 p → 3 d excitation gives rise to a more complicated structure.
