The combination of highly efficient gamma ray and conversion electron spectrometers with the excellent channel selection of recoil separators has allowed the in-beam study of reaction channels with cross sections as small as 200 nb. Thus, for the first time it has been possible to bring the full arsenal of in-beam spectroscopy to bear on nuclei around and beyond nobelium (Z = 102). This region is especially important because of its proximity to the long predicted 'island of stability' for shell stabilized superheavy nuclei. This review summarizes the recent work in this emerging field, highlights some key results and provides an outlook to future developments.
