Fused silica open tubular traps coated with a 15 μm film of dimethylsilicone have been successfully used to capture volatiles emitted by living plants. The atmosphere surrounding the plants is sucked into the trap in which the volatiles are retained. The trap is then installed in a multidimensional capillary GC system. The volatiles are thermally desorbed, cold trapped and then analysed on the analytical column. The total procedure is on‐line. Several examples illustrate the possibilities of the technique.
