Genetically modified sunflower oil, so called ‘high oleic’ sunflower oil, is a promising and environmentally friendly fluid that possesses many advantages as a lubricating oil. It will be more usable if its performance as lubricating oil can be optimised by additives. In the present study, we have examined model friction modifiers under boundary lubrication conditions to understand their applicability to vegetable oils. Octadecanoic acid provides good lubricity. Octadecyl amine and octadecanamide are also acceptable, whereas octadecane thiol exhibits a negative effect on lubricity.
