The structure of random ethylene‐propylene and ethylene‐butene copolymer crystals has been investigated using fuming nitric acid. This paper is concerned with the removal of branches by nitric acid from crystals grown from two special carbon‐14 labelled copolymers. In addition to changes in branch content, weight losses and changes in long periods, melting behaviour and unit cell spacings which result from nitric acit treatment are reported. The results indicate that branches are contained within the crystalline cores of the lamellar crystals of the ethylene‐propylene and the ethylene‐butene copolymers.
