Australia is widely regarded as one of the most equalitarian industrial countries. New data indicate that the gross rate of occupational mobility between fathers and sons in Australia is high compared with Italy but somewhat lower than in the United States. However, when structural determinants are taken into account, Australia is found to have the highest rate of circulation mobility of the three countries. Additional detailed evidence for Australian occupational mobility is briefly summarized and interpreted in the context of industrial change.
