Summary The conservation of a severely damaged eighteenth-century pastel and gouache portrait was undertaken as a final year research project on the MA Conservation course at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. Treatment undertaken included consolidation of the flaking gouache, surface cleaning, mould reduction, removal of a canvas support and strainer, washing on the low pressure suction table, refining, infilling and toning. Ethical considerations are also discussed.
