Time-resolved absorption spectroscopy has been exploited in a study of the reactions of Ne( 3 P 0 ) metastable atoms in pure afterglow plasmas ranging in density from 5*10 17 to 8*10 18 cm -3 . The measurements were conducted at the temperatures of 150, 300 and 400K and the first reported determinations of the variation of the quenching kinetics with temperature are presented. An anomalously large three-body rate coefficient was determined for this state and cannot be reconciled within the framework of present kinetic understanding.
