This term was chosen in order to integrate the three diseases under a single descriptive heading and to emphasize their basic pathologic process, that of histiocytic proliferation in the particular tissue involved. Lichtenstein's terminology climaxed a period during which pathologists investigating these diseases expressed the opinion that eosinophilic granuloma of bone, as originally described by Otani and Ehrlich2and by Lichtenstein and Jaffe3in 1940, was one variation in the clinical expression of a single...Bibliography1.
