In the paper, numerical assessment of ionised field quantities associated with unipolar DC corona is carried out using a modified finite-element algorithm. The solution is performed iteratively, using second-order isoparametric triangular elements and an improved updating criterion for the space-charge distribution, thus allowing accurate computation of both the potential and electric field values at the finite-element nodes. The necessary boundary condition at the coronating conductor surface is obtained using a simple relation for the electric field as a function of the applied voltage level, in agreement with previous experimental observations. Different cases of the single conductor above ground geometry are considered, and the computed results show good agreement with available experimental data.
