Method for close arterial infusion of the lactating mammary gland

A simple method of catheterizing an artery which supplies the ipsilateral side of the mammary gland of a high-producing dairy cow is described. The preparation allows infusion of the mammary gland with nutrients or endocrine factors locally, but does not require general anaesthesia or deep surgical dissection. Following a preliminary experiment involving infusion of acetate, the catheters were removed and the cows returned to the milking herd.
