Chemical composition of the essential oil from the aerial parts of three Labiatae species of Iran : Salvia indica, Thymus caucasicus and Ballota nigra obtained by hydrodistillation were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Twenty four components representing 95.9 % of the oil of S. indica were identified of which α-pinene (17.0 %), 1,8-cineole (13.4 %) and β-pinene (11.3 %) were the major constituents. Twenty three compounds representing 90.5 % of the oil of T. caucasicus including 1,8-cineole (15.4 %) and (E)-nerolidol (13.8 %) as the main constituents were identified. β-pinene (39.0 %) and α-pinene (34.5 %) were the main components among 12 constituents characterized in the oil of B. nigra, representing 99.3 % of the total compounds detected.
