To explain the crystallization behaviour and phase relationships of precursor derived Si‐B‐C‐N ceramics, In (pN2)‐Tdiagrams were calculated. The results can be used to optimize the chemical composition and the physico‐chemical conditions for heat treatment. Stabilization of specific phase assemblages requires careful adjustment of the N2partial pressure during heating and cooling. The high thermal stability of silicoboron carbonitrides can be explained by their particular microstructure and the resulting stabilization of Si3N4.
