Denominal verbs across Uto‐Aztecan are used for several functions, including the indication of such semantic notions as make, use, have, get, become, marry, put on, and remove, as well as some others with a more limited distribution. Denominal verb constructions in these languages display characteristics that are typically attributed to noun incorporation, including the “stranding” of modifiers and the appearance of hyponymous objects (comparable to classificatory noun incorporation, e.g., I pet‐have horses). The distribution of these morphosyntactic characteristics across the Uto‐Aztecan language family indicates that they can probably be reconstructed for Proto‐Uto‐Aztecan.
