Key result
Adrenalectomy reduces blood glucose ~33% compared to sham controls, accompanied by lower PEPCK activity.
Why the study?
It was not known if the effects of glycyrrhizic acid on glucose and lipid metabolism were direct or mediated through glucocorticoids.
RCT (n=30)
randomly assigned
This preclinical study investigates the effects of glycyrrhizic acid on glucose and lipid metabolism in the absence of endogenous glucocorticoids.
Answers are grounded in this paper and cite their sources.
No immediate clinical implications for glycemic control; leaves open glucocorticoid modulation of PEPCK for future mechanistic studies.

Ng et al. (2012) conducted an RCT in Glucose and lipid metabolism in the absence of endogenous glucocorticoids (n=30). Glycyrrhizic acid vs. Sham and untreated adrenalectomised groups was evaluated on Blood glucose level. Adrenalectomy improved blood glucose levels by 33% compared to sham rats and led to a significant reduction in PEPCK activity.
