An extensive fossil record of arthropods in amber from the Middle Eocene lignite-bearing sediments from Umarsar, Kutch basin, Gujarat has been catalogued.Over 132 true flies, 6 other families of Diptera, several spiders, eusocial insects, millipedes, beetles and bark flies are fossilized and found wellpreserved in the amber resin. The family Chironomidae (Diptera) were the most dominant group of insects 41% of the total entomofauna.Such assemblage composition of insect fauna is presumed to be influenced by tropical and sub-tropical vegetation.Dominanace of Chironomidae indicate aquatic habitats surrounding the Eocene dipterocarp rainforests.
