Large energy loss caused by pumps at unloading and motors operated with low efficiency, is a prominent problem for the hydraulic drive system consisting of multi motor-pumps. The energy loss can be reduced by an energy-saving design method where motors and pumps are selected from the corresponding sets to improve the energy efficiency of the drive system. However, the number and type of motors and pumps is constrained by the contained elements to be selected in the set, and the calculated workload is enormous. Based on the previously proposed method, a genetic algorithm is used to select motors and pumps to satisfy the need of pressure, flow, and minimize unloaded loss. In this improved method, the motor-pumps can be selected quickly and accurately from sets with a larger range of types and numbers of elements, and the energy efficiency can be further improved. The method is applied to a rapid sheet tension hydraulic press to validate the effectiveness, and results show that the energy consumption in a work cycle can be reduced by 26.97%.
