This thesis aims to contribute to the growing evidence base examining the long-term cognitive and psychosocial outcomes of anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis (anti-NMDARE). Despite increasing recognition of the condition, understanding of long-term neurocognitive outcomes following diagnosis remains variable across existing studies. In addition, the long-term impact of anti-NMDARE on psychological wellbeing, quality of life (QOL), and everyday functioning is poorly understood. The first paper comprised a scoping review that mapped existing evidence on patient-reported QOL and psychological functioning (i.e. anxiety and depression), alongside an appraisal of methodological quality. The second paper presented a cross-sectional case series employing a convergent parallel mixed methods design. Five participants with a confirmed diagnosis completed a series of cognitive tasks and psychosocial outcome measures, alongside a semi-structured interview which explored the challenges faced and supports required post-diagnosis. Thesis is embargoed until 31 July 2029.
