Characterized source models, composed of strong motion generation areas (SMGAs), were estimated using the empirical Green’s function method for the 2025 MJ7.5 Aomori-ken Toho-oki and the 1994 MJ7.6 Sanriku-haruka-oki earthquakes. Three SMGAs of the Sanriku-haruka-oki earthquake were located near the edge of the large slip area. For the Aomori-ken Toho-oki earthquake, one SMGA was located in the same region as the large slip area, while the other was located in a deeper region of the large slip area. Combined area of SMGAs of both earthquakes were slightly smaller than combined area of asperities of the existing scaling relation.
