Summary This qualitative case study examines the impact of tourism gentrification on the life and culture of Hoi An Ancient Town. It focuses on highlighting the transformations in architecture, lifestyle, and atmosphere in the area after its UNESCO recognition, from the perspective of residents living in the town center. This case argues that while architectural and culinary values are preserved and widely spread, tourism gentrification in the town has negatively altered the lifestyle and behavior of the people of Hoi An. Tourism is the backbone of Hoi An City, but the focus on tourism development should not ignore its impact on local residents. This case study enriches the academic discussion on tourism gentrification and presents critical implications for the sustainable management of heritage sites.
