The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 represents a significant attempt to restructure school education in India after several decades of reliance on the National Policy on Education, 1986, as modified in 1992. The policy proposes changes that extend from early childhood care and education to secondary schooling, with particular emphasis on foundational literacy and numeracy, curricular restructuring, competency-based learning, multilingual education, vocational exposure, assessment reform, teacher development, educational technology and inclusion. One of its most visible structural proposals is the replacement of the earlier 10+2 model with the 5+3+3+4 curricular and pedagogical structure covering the age group of 3–18 years. This paper critically examines the major school education reforms envisaged under NEP 2020 and considers the opportunities and challenges associated with their implementation. The study follows a qualitative and descriptive-analytical approach based primarily on secondary sources, including the NEP 2020 document, the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023, government programmes and reports, UDISE+ data, and selected academic literature. The analysis indicates that NEP 2020 attempts to move school education away from excessive dependence on rote learning towards competency, understanding, flexibility and holistic development. Initiatives such as NIPUN Bharat, NCF-SE 2023, PARAKH and PM SHRI illustrate efforts to translate policy provisions into institutional and classroom practices. At the same time, policy reform cannot be separated from the realities of India's highly diverse school system. Differences in infrastructure, teacher preparedness, language contexts, digital access, financial capacity and state-level implementation create significant challenges. The study therefore argues that the effectiveness of NEP 2020 will depend not only on the quality of its policy vision but also on sustained implementation, adequate resources, teacher support, institutional coordination and sensitivity to local contexts.
