This research investigates the extant capacity for spatial data sharing among Malaysian organizations, highlighting its significance for urban planning, environmental stewardship, and smart city initiatives. A qualitative research design employed semi-structured interviews with 63 stakeholders across 12 organizations, from both the public and private sectors. Although larger organizations possess superior spatial data capabilities, significant hurdles remain, such as data integrity, privacy, ethical considerations, interoperability, and accessibility, according to the research. The study underscores the vital importance of collaboration among policymakers, practitioners, and data providers for better spatial data infrastructure (SDI). Enhanced spatial data sharing significantly boosts efficiency in decision-making, sustainable development, and Malaysia’s smart city ambitions.
