Coherent technology is regarded as a competitive candidate for next-generation elastic 100/200-G or beyond passive optical networks (PON) with fine-grained rate tuning. The characteristics of digital compensation and superior receiver sensitivity of coherent PON (CPON) satisfy the users requirements for high-capacity and high-dense access. With a wider power budget and richer digital signal processing (DSP) sources, CPON enables higher capacity, larger coverage extended reach, and higher density support with complex network topology, especially compared with the previous generation. With the evolution of access networks scale, hardware scalability and software-defined flexibility have led to a series of dynamic behaviors in CPON. In response to the above questions, DSP-enabled different finegrained tuning solutions and data-driven models for rate flexibility, parameter monitoring, and dynamic encryption of downstream links at tunable fine rate grid are emphatically analyzed and demonstrated by proof-of-concepts in this work.
