The electric field of arbitrarily focused few-femtosecond pulsed Gaussian beams is characterized for their phase-sensitive interaction with matter. In the case of a transversally extended interaction region, the electric field is blurred, but effective values of the carrier-envelope phase and carrier frequency can still be defined.
