Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone’s withdrawal from the film “Kalki following the decline of her demand of 8 h work per day reignited the debate around Bollywood’s work culture and actors’ right to have fixed working hours. However, the debates largely remained confined to celebrity news headlines rather than being subjected to sustained academic inquiry. This paper seeks to move women actors’ acts of resistance against unfair practices in Bollywood beyond the confines of celebrity news headlines and situate it within a critical academic discourse. Employing Critical Discourse Analysis as the methodology, the paper examines how media responses systematically depoliticize women actors’ labor resistance by reframing it as individualized controversy or celebrity disruption. The paper concludes by conceptually framing these instances, not as isolated events but as part of a recurring template of depoliticization and situates women actors’ resistance within broader discourses on feminist labor movements.
