The passivation of sputter‐deposited, microcrystalline Fe‐Cr alloys was studied in situ with the scanning tunneling microscope. Highly crystalline film surfaces were observed on alloys with low Cr contents such as 13.8%. The amount of disorder increased sharply between 14.7 and 16.5% Cr. The results are broadly consistent with earlier ex situ studies, and with a percolation model of alloy passivation.
