Key result
Past obesity before age 50 is linked to ~15% higher risk of incident T2D.
Why the study?
Little is known about the agreement between self-reported information and medical claims data on diagnosed diabetes in the Medicaid population.

History of early obesity may inform diabetes risk assessment despite later normalization; leaves open whether weight loss fully mitigates risk.
Ngo et al. (2003) conducted a cohort in Type 2 diabetes mellitus (n=118,438). Previous obesity (becoming normal weight after age 52) vs. Maintaining normal weight was evaluated on Incident T2DM during the follow-up period after the age of 52 (HR 1.15, 95% CI 1.04 to 1.27). Previous exposure to obesity before age 50, even if normal weight was achieved later, significantly increased the risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to maintaining a normal weight (HR 1.15).
