Soluble fractions prepared from representatives of 3 genera of ammonia-oxidising bacteria all contained CO-binding c-type cytochromes and the cytochrome P-460 chromophore. Hydroxylamine oxidase from terrestrial strains of Nitrosomonas europaea was immunologically related to the analogous protein from marine strains of the same genus. Soluble cytochrome oxidase nitrite reductase activity was detected only in extracts prepared from terrestrial strains of N. europaea among the organisms examined.
