Key result
Coronary care unit admission fails to reduce acute myocardial infarction mortality versus pre-unit care.
Why the study?
There were no well controlled studies to clearly demonstrate the value of coronary care units for acute myocardial infarction mortality.
Key points are not available for this paper at this time.
Comparison
Patients treated before vs after establishment of a coronary care unit
Design
Retrospective study
No mortality difference after CCU introduction; leaves open their value absent prospective randomized evidence.
A retrospective study of the mortality rate of acute myocardial infarction in two groups of patients treated before and after a coronary care unit was established showed no difference between them. Though it is difficult to compare two series retrospectively so far there are no well controlled studies to demonstrate clearly the value of coronary care units.

Astvad et al. (1974) studied this question. Treatment in a coronary care unit showed no difference in acute myocardial infarction mortality rates compared to treatment before the unit was established.
