As care provision becomes increasingly complex, nurses have to rely on sound decision making skills to maintain good outcomes (Muir 2004). Therefore, gaining a better understanding of their decision-making processes is important for nurses and their organisations (Buckingham and Adams 2000). This article uses a case study to critically reflect on the decision-making process in an emergency situation, examines the various factors that influenced the process, and discusses the way in which the decision affected other members of the multidisciplinary team.
